Night Music

First the quiet
until ears adjust
filtering out
the everyday, the ordinary

then the strike of a match
sizzle of wax
a candle lit
with a sputter

settling in of the body
stretch of tendon
creak of bone
a sigh

lone chirp of a bird
in the big tree
an answered call
in the dark distance

lonesome train whistle
owning melancholy
vibration of power
across the wooden porch

soprano cricket
alto frog
a man's tenor song
in the yard below

 heartbeat in the ears
soft breath
night music
on the porch.
