Everything and Nothing

Photo ~ Diana Matisz

Nothing.

Little black holes
seared into the fabric
of an otherwise
tight-seamed life

The deep nothings
of lost hours
and wasted words
loss of life and love
worry fear pain
perforations
through which
the blood of living
flows unstoppable

The sweeter nothings
of sleeping in the sun
and waking once again
joy in laughter and passion
emotional rescue, the right chords
loopholes
through which
the blood of living
reinvents itself

One nothing after another
little black holes
spreading and fusing
fibers woven
into intricate detail
and suddenly the nothings
are no longer nothing
but

Everything.

[ Written for OneShotWednesday at One Stop Poetry . I also wish to thank @hgracestewart for playing substitute muse today. When I said I had 'nothing' for OneShotWednesday, she said "write about nothing" :-) Thank you Heather. ]

  2. YES!
I knew you'd rise to the challenge.
    "The sweeter nothings
    of sleeping in the sun
    and waking once again"

Just beautiful. It means 'everything' that I could help another poet today. Hey, that's why I'm here.

    ;)

  5. Beautiful poem, Diana. I especially like when the sweeter nothings kick in and weave into the pattern to everything.

  6. Absolutely stunning. Very strong depths that bring this really into something AMAZING! Seems so dark and then opens. Wonderful Diana!

  10. Life is lived between events and art is made there too. The meanings lie not in the words themselves but what they imply, the vast worlds they display. Well written and apt. Beautiful.

  11. Beautifully and unerringly crafted, Diana. "...perforations/through which/
the blood of living/flows unstoppable..." was especially vivid for me. I do like that you balanced it with some sweetness before the rather chilling but perfectly inescapable conclusions of the ending.

  12. This is my kind of poem; beautifully written- thank you for sharing! I particularly enjoy the 'sweeter nothings'. A slight element of Samuel Beckett?

  14. exquisitely written...I visualize life through your poem as intricate lace...beautiful and mysterious, holes between the threads, all part of the wholeness of being.

  15. Dear Diana
From the start of the verse...
    'Little black holes
    seared into the fabric
    of an otherwise
    tight-seamed life'
you captured my imagination and in the end you got me totally with 'everything' .. very nicely done. Thanks for sharing..

  18. You are a good poet, but I have a philosophical disagreement with you and many other poets (most of them young) who write with the attitude that life is some kind of meaningless victimization. It is not sexy to be a victim nor even attractive to me. "Loopholes through which the blood of living reinvents itself" is a phrase for healing. Even when we are down to a loophole, we can regenerate ourselves. Look at life more closely. See the beauty and love there. Build yourself a Life you can be proud of. Use your great writing skills to communicate this.

  19. Big Sur Blogisphere:
While I appreciate your comment and critique, I am not a 'victim' nor do I believe that life is 'some kind of meaningless victimization'. My poem,to me, was simply expressing the thought that although the events that occur and leave us feeling as if they are 'nothing' much to our lives, really are 'everything'. Those 'nothings' make our life what it is. And I'm very proud of the life I've earned. Thanks much for your time.

  20. I appreciate how your poetry in general speaks of the whole of life. The light and darkness of it and the shades in between. I enjoy seeing you evolve as an artist.
