That's How I Roll

i live in a city
of bridges
most of them gold
with names
like Hot Metal
Panhandle
and Roberto Clemente

i live in a city
of rivers
reminders
of who lived
here first
Allegheny
Monongahela

i live in a city
of steep streets
like Troy Hill
Canton and Pillow
Avenues
where driving
a stick-shift
is an olympic event

i live in a city
with a language
all its own
eastern european
staccato rhythms
punctuated with
“yinz” “nebby”
and “redding up”

i live in this city
and that’s
how i roll

  1. The ending is perfect. Adding slang verbage to the last stanza spiced the poem up. I like it.
